Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
