Sam Fender was awarded the prestigious award in October in Newcastle

The star has handed over the complete sum of his twenty-five thousand pound award prize money to the MVT, which functions to save the United Kingdom's small live music spots.

Fender was presented with the award on October 16 as his latest record his work was chosen as the top album of the last 12 months.

Fender has chosen to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the vital role small stages played in his early career.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing this success if it hadn't been for all the shows I did around the region, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," stated the artist. "These locations are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these locations have permanently closed – roughly 16 percent of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, top acts such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its attempts to support the industry, by adding a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which benefits local stages.

Fender also participated, collecting over £100k on his live tour to help numerous local spots across the UK.

The donation assisted locations that were confronting potential shutdown due to challenges caused by floods, fires and personal losses, as well as permit problems, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Some locations received monetary aid in modernizing infrastructure and gear that directly benefitted performers and concertgoers.

"The concept that funds from concerts in major spaces helps the local stages, where it begins for musicians like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has stated.

Fender is far from the only musician to contribute his Mercury Prize winnings to worthy causes.

In the band earned the prize in the year 1996 for their release the album, vocalist Jarvis Cocker declared that the band would donate their cash to the charity War Child.

In 2002, artist Ms Dynamite divided her award among multiple charities, such as the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also gave a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked better apparatus," the artist told outlets.

Previously, the band donated their prize money to the local youth club that developed their band, as well as other independent music bodies.

Also the 1994 recipients the group contributed their award to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was found to have the disease.

"The victory was ample," said vocalist the singer. "The money was the cherry on top but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our success affected somebody else's life."

Recently, the trust shared it had protected several grassroots venues in south-east England, by bringing them into public stewardship.

One venue in that area and the second in that location were purchased under the community ownership scheme, which is supported by a national body and supporters who purchase "stakes" in the properties.
