The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent honors show draws close, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
